The jury’s decision was not easy after the extraordinary level shown over the last few days by the 20 pianists of 11 nationalities who were hoping to win the Iturbi Prize awarded by the Provincial Council. This makes the triumph of Nabeel Hayek, the 23-year-old who won the 23rd edition of the Valencia International Piano Competition – the most international Iturbi competition with 200 candidates from 40 countries – even more remarkable. Behind Hayek, but equally deserving, were Uladzislau Khandohi, the audience favourite, who won second prize, and Ruggiero Fiorella, who came third.

The three finalists of the Iturbi Competition played on Saturday at the closing gala held at the Teatro Principal, after receiving their awards. At the start of the ceremony, the decision of the jury chaired by Joaquín Achúcarro was announced, following the Grand Final held on Friday evening at the Palau de la Música. “The three pianists who have competed until the very end for the prizes are all winners, because during the competition they have demonstrated unquestionable talent and have thrilled us all at the great piano festival that the Provincial Council has been organising for half a century, and which it will continue to promote with the standards of quality that make the Iturbi one of the world’s greatest piano competitions”, said the Provincial Councillor for Culture, Paco Teruel.

Visibly moved, Joaquín Achúcarro highlighted “the collaboration of the whole of Valencia in keeping this great competition more alive than ever, especially in a year that has not been easy, with a disaster that has put the city and its towns in the spotlight”. The Chairman of the Jury asked for a minute’s silence for the victims of the Isolated High Altitude Depression (DANA) and praised the solidarity of the entire Valencian people. The awards ceremony then began in a packed Teatro Principal. The last to receive his award, from the Provincial Councillor for Culture, Paco Teruel, was Nabeel Hayek, who thanked the organisation, the jury and the city for the recognition in such an important competition as the Iturbi.

Passionate about contemporary music

Nabeel Hayek (Nazareth 2001) holds a bachelor’s degree from the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music, where he studied with Arie Vardi and Asaf Zohar, and a master’s degree from the Juilliard School with Julian Martin. Since 2017, Hayek has been mentored by Murray Perahia. Looking ahead, he will continue his studies to earn a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree at Juilliard. Nabeel is an active chamber musician and collaborative pianist with extensive experience, and continues to expand his repertoire as a soloist with a passion for contemporary and 20th-century music. Hayek has given recitals in Europe, Asia and North America, and has performed for the Arthur Rubinstein International Music Society and the Israel Philharmonic.

Hayek, who will record a CD as the winner of the Iturbi Competition, performed Johannes Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1 in the Grand Final, a technically complex work that is essential in the classical repertoire. Earlier, in the final round of the competition with the best six remaining competitors, he chose Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4. In both sessions, he played alongside the Orquesta de Valencia, conducted by maestro Guillermo García Calvo.

In the early stages of the competition, Nabeel Hayek performed various works of other great composers and played, as a compulsory piece, the score by Sebastián Mariné from Granada, entitled “Gra” in homage to Valencia, which is suffering after the recent DANA. A small tribute by Mariné to the victims, which was joined by the organisers of the competition.

Final table for the 2025 Iturbi

In addition to the podium places occupied by Hayek, Khandohi and Fiorella, who will receive €30,000, €20,000 and €10,000 respectively, as well as taking part in a concert tour as winners of the competition, Spanish pianist Eugenia Sánchez Durán obtained the highest vote from among the candidates who missed out on the Grand Final, for which she will receive €8,000, compared with the €5,000 awarded to Spanish pianist Emin Kiourktchian and Chinese pianist Yungyung Guo, who complete the table of honour as the six best performers in the competition.

As for the special prizes awarded by the Provincial Council itself and the competition’s collaborators, such as the Valencia Philharmonic Society and Kawai, the prize for the best performance of Spanish music went to Emin Kiourktchian, the prize for a work by Chopin to Ruggiero Fiorella, the Mozart sonata to Eugenia Sánchez Durán and the Beethoven concerto – the Kawai prize – to Uladzislau Khandohi. Finally, the best contestant chosen by the audience was Khandohi himself, who will receive another €2,000 from Clemente Pianos in addition to his second prize.

The artistic advisor to the Iturbi Prize, Ana Guijarro, highlighted the youth of the participants, whose average age was much lower than in previous editions of the competition, and thanked “the audience for their warm welcome, both at the concerts with orchestra in the Iturbi Hall, which decided the final result, and at the closing gala in the Teatro Principal, a unique setting to enjoy music and the piano”.

The candidates for the Grand Final of the 2025 Iturbi Competition, organised by the Provincial Council of Valencia, are Ruggiero Fiorella, Uladzislau Khandohi and Nabeel Hayek, who will face the final challenge to win the Valencia International Piano Competition this Friday in the Iturbi Hall of the Palau de la Música (7 pm). Now in its 23rd edition, the competition has broken its record for applications with 200 candidates from 40 countries. Spain’s Emin Kiourktchian and Eugenia Sánchez Durán, and China’s Yungyung Guo, have fallen just short of reaching the Grand Final.

The Chairman of the Jury, Joaquín Achúcarro, highlights the youth of the participants in the Iturbi Prize, as demonstrated by the emerging talent of the three finalists, aged between 22 and 23. For his part, the Provincial Councillor for Culture, Paco Teruel, fully agreed with Achúcarro that the Iturbi is “a fantastic competition that ranks among the best piano competitions in the world”, mainly due to “the extremely high standard of the competitors and the commitment of the Provincial Council’s Culture Department to the quality of the competition and the recognition of the best performers, without fear of leaving the prize vacant if the required level is not achieved”.

On this occasion, the competition has been very close since the start of the final phase on 4 June, and the Grand Final, which will take place this Friday at the Palau de la Música, is expected to be no different, with free admission until full capacity is reached. Ruggiero Fiorella and Uladzislau Khandohi will perform Prokofiev’s second concerto, while Nabeel Hayek has opted for Brahms’ first. The three finalists will perform alongside the Orquesta de Valencia, conducted by maestro Guillermo García Calvo. The final day of the Iturbi Competition can also be followed on the Provincial Council’s YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLNp6H8NGxwCAUIfOVtATWnB_TUevd7ehN.

The finalists

Ruggiero Fiorella (Puglia 2002) studies with Pavel Gililov at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, and with Eliso Virsaladze. He began piano studies at the age of seven, later graduating from the Florence Conservatory. He then obtained a Master’s Degree at the Mozarteum, in the class of Claudius Tanski, and was also tutored by Riccardo Risaliti in Italy. He performs regularly in halls all over Europe and has received awards in competitions such as Fvg 2024 (second prize) and Venezia 2022 (third prize). Since 2017, he has been a member of Trio ad Libitum, the 2021 winner of the Italian National Prize for the Arts.

Uladzislau Khandohi (Minsk 2001) comes from a family of musicians famous for their mastery of the dulcimer. He started piano lessons at the age of seven and soon gained recognition. At just ten, he won the Grand Prix at the Mendzelevskaya Open Competition in Mogilev, a year later he triumphed at the Sviridov in St Petersburg, and in 2014 he won first prize at the Astana Piano Passion Festival. He achieved worldwide recognition in 2016, becoming a finalist in the Gina Bachauer Competition and releasing his debut album with Melodiya. In 2020, he enrolled at the Moscow State Conservatory, subsequently winning prestigious competitions such as those held in Ferrol and Sanremo. He was a finalist in the Cliburn Piano Competition in 2022 and won second prize in Sydney in 2023.

Nabeel Hayek (Nazareth 2001) is a graduate of the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music, where he studied with Arie Vardi and Asaf Zohar, and holds a master’s degree from the Juilliard School with Julian Martin. Since 2017, Hayek has been mentored by Murray Perahia. Looking ahead, he will continue his studies for a PhD in Musical Arts at Juilliard. Hayek has given recitals in Europe, Asia and North America, and has performed for the Arthur Rubinstein International Music Society and the Israel Philharmonic.

Closing gala and prizes

The final classification of the 2025 Iturbi Prize will be announced this Saturday at the closing gala to be held at the Teatro Principal in Valencia (7:30 pm), for which tickets must be reserved in advance, also free of charge, at www.servientradas.com. The gala, featuring the three finalists and the Orquesta de Valencia, can also be streamed on the YouTube channel of the Provincial Council, which is organising the competition: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLNp6H8NGxwCAUIfOVtATWnB_TUevd7ehN.

As for the prizes, the winner will receive €30,000, the recording of a CD and participation in a concert tour; and the second and third place winners will receive €20,000 and €10,000 respectively, as well as participation in the tour with the winner. The three pianists who fall just short of the Grand Final will receive €5,000 each, and the best of them will receive an additional €3,000. There are also special prizes awarded by the Provincial Council itself and by collaborators such as the Philharmonic Society of Valencia and Kawai. These prizes will recognise the best performance of Spanish music, a piece by Chopin, a Mozart sonata and a Beethoven concerto. Finally, the best contestant chosen by the public will receive €2,000 from Clemente Pianos.

The 23rd edition of the Iturbi Prize, organized by the Diputació de València, now has its finalists. Eugenia Sánchez Durán, Emin Kiourktchian, Yungyung Guo, Ruggiero Fiorella, Nabeel Hayek, and Uladzislau Khandohi will compete for a place in the Grand Final of the competition. The Provincial Councillor for Culture, Paco Teruel, underlined “the impressive level of the participants, which makes the Iturbi a great competition, as the Chairman of the Jury and one of the piano greats, Joaquín Achúcarro, rightly says”.

Out of 20 contestants, these six young talents qualified in the first round of the competition, together with Yifan Wu, Danylo Saienko, Natalie Schwamova and Arsen Dalibaltayan, who did not make it past the semi-finals held over the weekend. In the final, which will take place on Tuesday 10 and Wednesday 11 June in the Iturbi Hall of the Palau de la Música (6 pm), each of the finalists will perform a Beethoven concerto for piano and orchestra with the Orquesta de València, conducted by Guillermo García Calvo. The best three will go on to the Grand Final on Friday 13 June (7 pm) in the same Iturbi Hall.

Both the final and the Grand Final can be followed in person, with free admission until full capacity is reached, or by streaming on the Provincial Council of Valencia’s YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLNp6H8NGxwCAUIfOVtATWnB_TUevd7ehN.

The same is true of the closing gala, which will be held on Saturday 14 June at the Teatro Principal (7:30 pm), for which tickets must be booked in advance at www.servientradas.com. Representing the jury, Joaquín Achúcarro emphasised “the high level of the contestants” and confessed that “the unanimity of the judging criteria has caused surprise, and at the same time joy, among the members of this jury”.

The six finalists

Eugenia Sánchez Durán (Murcia 2004) studies with Professor Leo de María and maestro Leonel Morales at the Alfonso X el Sabio University in Madrid. She has excelled in international competitions such as Las Rozas, Salzburg and Épinal, taking fourth prize in the latter in this year’s edition; and has performed in important halls such as the Max-Schlereth Saal and the Solitär Hall in Salzburg; the Carnegie Hall in New York (USA); the Shenzhen Concert Hall (China); the Slovak Philharmonic; and the Théâtre de La Rotonde (France).

Emin Kiourktchian (Cordoba 2004) began his career at the age of six with his mother, the pianist Larisa Tedtoeva. In April 2021, he won the City of Albacete National Competition for Young Pianists and was admitted to study at the Escuela Reina Sofía in Madrid with Professor Milana Chernyavska. He has received master classes from renowned pianists such as Leonskaja, Shereshvskaya, Berman, Ovchinnikov and Martínez Mehner. His recent successes include first prize at the Frechilla-Zuloaga Competition in Valladolid (November 2023), and third prize at the City of Malaga International Competition (June 2024).

Yungyung Guo (Hong Kong 2003) has performed at such venues as the Sydney Opera House and the Shanghai Symphony Auditorium, and with such orchestras as the Sydney Symphony, the Mexico City Philharmonic and the Shanghai Philharmonic, working with conductors including Benjamin Northey, Umberto Clerici and Scott Yoo. As a chamber musician, she has performed with cellist Li-Wei Qin. Yungyung was third in the Sydney International Piano Competition, first in the Gurwitz International Piano Competition and second in the New Orleans International Piano Competition.

On 6 June at 7.30 pm, the Sala Iturbi at the Palau de la Música in Valencia will host an extraordinary concert by pianist Marta Menezes, accompanied by the Orchestra of Valencia conducted by Pablo González.

Marta Menezes is one of the most outstanding Portuguese pianists of her generation. Her recitals explore the dialogue between tradition and originality through performances that highlight the nuances, subtlety and musical sensitivity that characterise her playing. Her carefully selected repertoire, which shows an affinity with Beethoven, ranges from the Baroque to the present day and often includes works by lesser-known composers, many of them Portuguese.

The programme begins with Delius’ The Walk to the Paradise Garden, followed by Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand in D major, and will conclude with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 74, the ‘Pathétique’.

Tickets can be purchased on the Palau website and at the box office.

For this 23rd edition of the Valencia Iturbi International Piano Competition, the Provincial Council of Valencia has commissioned composer Sebastián Mariné to write a piece that must be performed by all the pianists who reach the semi-final stage. The commission has a special significance this year, as it is dedicated to those affected by the Isolated High-Altitude Depression (DANA) storm and flooding which hit Valencia.

The composition is entitled Gra (‘grain’, in Valencian) and, as the composer himself explains, “It is a very modest contribution to all those who suffered the extreme violence of the DANA on 29 October 2024 in Valencia. It is luminous, energetic and expressive music. A tiny grain of sand that attempts to convey companionship in the pain of loss, and hope to overcome the terrible tragedy”.

Born in Granada in 1947, Sebastián Mariné studied piano, composition and conducting at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid. Since 2008, he has been President of the Madrid Association of Composers, which organises the Madrid International Contemporary Music Festival. He has received the Claudio Prieto Prize at the National Living Culture Awards and the Medal of Honour from the Reina Sofía School of Music. He has given recitals throughout Europe, America and Asia and performed with leading symphony orchestras. He has premiered concertos for piano and orchestra written for him and is currently a member of the Sonor Ensemble, conducted by Luis Aguirre. In addition to LUX, which includes his own piano works, he has recorded numerous albums with music by composers including Ronald Stevenson, Rafael Rodríguez Albert, Pedro Iturralde, Tomás Marco, Antón García Abril and José María Benavente. Since 1979, he has been a Professor at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid (where he currently conducts the Contemporary Music Group and the Classical Orchestra) and, since its foundation in 1991, at the Reina Sofía School of Music.

With one week to go until the curtain opens on the 23rd Provincial Council of Valencia’s Iturbi Prize, to be held between 4 and 13 June at the Palau de la Música, the winners of the last edition of the Valencia International Piano Competition are triumphing in the best competitions in the world. The Italian Elia Cecino is one of the semi-finalists in The Cliburn, the prestigious American competition held every four years to coincide with presidential inaugurations; and Rachel Breen is a finalist in the Queen Elizabeth of Belgium, which is taking place these days at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels.

The importance of the Iturbi Competition was highlighted by the pianist Joaquín Achúcarro, Chairman of the Jury, during the presentation of the 2025 edition last Monday in the Provincial Council’s Palau dels Scala, “since I have been coming to Valencia, the Iturbi Competition has not stopped growing and we now have a great competition; I feel sorry for those of us who have to decide who is going to win”. The winner will be chosen from one of the 20 pianists of 11 nationalities who will begin to compete from next week. “The only indication we give to the jury is that they choose the best, without fear of leaving a prize vacant because the decision may seem unpopular”, said the Provincial Councillor for Culture, Paco Teruel.

The Artistic Director of the Iturbi Prize, Ana Guijarro, also referred to the quality of the candidates, who have had to overcome “an exhaustive and rigorous selection process that has led us to be left with 20 candidates from among 200 applications from pianists from 40 countries”. In Guijarro’s opinion, “the best demonstration of the level of the Iturbi Competition and the musical talent that has passed and continues to pass through Valencia, without going any further, is the trajectory of the three pianists who competed in the Grand Final of the last edition, and who are currently triumphing in the best piano competitions in the world”.

From Europe to the United States

Among the competitions organised in Europe, one of the most renowned is the Queen Elizabeth of Belgium, a competition that encompasses different musical disciplines such as violin, cello, voice and, of course, piano. The Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels is currently hosting the final of the piano competition, which includes the American Rachel Breen, who came third in the Iturbi Competition in 2023. With the musical support of the Brussels Philharmonic, conducted by Kazushi Ono, Rachel competes with the best international piano talents in search of the prizes that will be awarded next Saturday.

From Brussels we cross the pond to see Elia Cecino, winner of the last edition of the Iturbi Competition and semi-finalist in The Cliburn, the competition that brings together the great emerging talents of international pianism these days in Texas, and which is looking for a successor to Yunchan Lim, the 18-year-old South Korean who won in 2022. Cecino, who stands out for his artistic and interpretative quality, seeks glory at The Cliburn alongside pianists from the United States, Russia, China, South Korea and other countries such as Poland, Germany and Canada.

And back on the European continent, we cannot forget the success of Anthony Ratinov in the last edition of the Busoni, which took place last year in the Italian town of Bolzano. Ratinov, runner-up in the 2023 Iturbi Competition, also won silver in another of the great competitions on the international piano circuit. At the Busoni Competition, the American pianist was recognised for his precision, inner energy and elegance, with a great performance of Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 that was praised by critics and jury alike.

The Valencia International Piano Competition was founded in 1981 and has been held 22 times to date, every two years, alternating in recent years with the Iturbi Festival, where the best pianists of the day take part. The Iturbi Prize is a member of the Alink-Argerich Foundation, which brings together most of the international piano competitions around the world.
